Best budget circular saw – SKIL 5280-01
The Skil 5280-1’s great features and reviews make it our pick for best budget circular saw.
This saw lets you tackle a wide range of DIY projects. It has plenty of power for a budget circular saw, without being too heavy. And it still has a budget price!
Talking of power – the 5280-1 comes with a 15 amp motor. That’s more than enough for a DIY circular saw – in fact, it can spin the blade at up top 5,300 RPM!
With that amount of power, owners of the 5280-1 have had no problems cutting 2x4s, 1.5” planks and plywood.
Here’s a tip though – your chances of cutting something successfully get much higher if you use the right kind of blade. (Check out our review of the best blades for a circular saw to find the right blade for your DIY project.)
Speaking of blades, the 5280-1 uses the 7 1/4 inch size. That’s pretty much the standard size for a circular saw blade these days, which makes it easy to find replacement blades 🙂
The Skil has been to designed to cut up to 2 7/16 inches at 90 degrees, which is deep enough to cut through a 2×4 in one pass.
And at 45 degrees, the saw has a maximum depth of 1 15/16 inches. That’s deep enough to cut a 1 1/2 inch board in one pass.
Combine that with the maximum bevel angle of 51 degrees and you can see why people think the Skil 5280-1 is the best budget circular saw.
A nice feature of the 5280-1 is the laser. If you haven’t used a circular saw with a laser, be prepared to be amazed 🙂
The laser shines on the piece of wood that you’re cutting and shows you if you’re on track on not. That makes cutting accurately way easier than it used to be.
Some users have said that the laser line isn’t easy to see in bright sunlight. If that’s gonna be a problem for you, there’s two fixes. Buy a much more expensive saw or just use the saw in the shade 🙂
If you’ve used a circular saw for any amount of time, you know that they can create a lot of dust. That’s to be expected (you’re cutting wood after all). But it can make life difficult if the dust stops you from seeing where you’re cutting.
The 5280-1 features a dust blower that’s been designed to get the dust away from the cutting area. That’s gonna make cutting accurately a little easier, which makes your life a little easier 🙂
The saw comes with a nylon carry case, a 24-tooth carbide blade and a blade wrench. And it also has a one year home use warranty in the rare case that something goes wrong with your saw.
Talking of things going wrong – Skil has put a lot of thought into preventing accidents with this saw.
It comes with a integrated blade guard that helps to prevent injuries. And the trigger has a safety lock which minimizes accidental starts.
Really, I can’t recommend this saw enough (I even wrote an entire SKIL 5280-01 review just about it).
If you want a capable saw at a reasonable price – the Skil 5280-1 is the best budget circular saw on the market today.

Best circular saw under $50 – Porter-Cable PCE300
The Skil 5280-01 is a great saw but I know a lot of people need to stay under a $50 budget.
If that’s you, I have a great recommendation for you.
In my opinion, the best circular saw under $50 is the Porter-Cable PCE300.
Why? Well it’s from Porter-Cable who know a thing or two about making great tools at a budget price. And it’s got everything you could ask for in a budget saw 🙂
The PCE300 comes with a 15 amp motor, which can spin it’s 7 1/4 inch blade up to 5,500 RPM. That’s enough to handle cutting 2x4s and plywood without breaking a sweat.
The PCE300 has a maximum bevel angle of 45 degrees. That’s a little less than the Skil 5280-01, which can bevel up to 51 degrees. But in my opinion that’s not a big a difference – especially if you’re on a budget.
Despite not being the biggest bevel-er on the block, you can still cut up to 1 7/8 inch deep when cutting at 45 degrees. And up to 2 1/2 inches deep at 90 degrees. So this saw can be used for enough DIY projects that it’s a great buy in my opinion.
The PCE300 weighs in at 9.5 pounds. That makes it one of the heavier budget circular saws but not by much – the Skil 5280-1 is 8.7 pounds. If you want a lighter saw, check out the Black & Decker BDCCS20B.
The saw comes with three year warranty, which is the longest warranty of all the budget circular saws that we reviewed. So if you buy this saw, you know that your investment is protected for a good while.
The PCE300 comes with a 18 tooth carbide tipped blade, which is good for framing projects. And Porter-Cable include an allen wrench to change the blade when you need to.
Update: we loved this saw so much that we included it in our guide to the 50 best gifts for DIY fans.

Best budget cordless saw – Black & Decker BDCCS20B
Black & Decker built their reputation by making solid tools at bargain prices and the BDCCS20B is no different.
It’s a 20V battery powered saw, which means that you can use it anywhere 🙂 The bad news about this saw is that it doesn’t come with any batteries 🙁
As far as power goes, this isn’t the most powerful saw on the market. But it’s not intended to be.
It’s designed to be a lightweight saw for light and medium duty cutting. And that’s what the BDCCS20B excels at.
You can easily cut 1/4 and 1/2 inch plywood with this saw. And with the recommended battery, you can expect to get a good hour of work out of the saw before you need to recharge.
When it comes to cutting, the saw comes with a carbide tipped blade that’s suitable for framing projects.
When you need to change the blade, the BDCCS20B has a spindle lock to stop the blade from spinning. And the included allen key make switching out the blade very easy.
The Black and Decker can bevel up to 45 degrees, with bevel stops at 45 and 90 degrees. Combine that with the flexibility of being able to use this saw anywhere and you have a saw that with make a lot of beginner DIY-ers very happy.
